A-POC ABLE

Brand Film - Direction / Produce

ISSEY MIYAKE has continued to create clothes starting from "A-POC (A Piece Of Cloth)". 1998 saw the launch of "A-POC", and in March 2021, an engineering team led by Yoshiyuki Miyamae launched "A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE", The company is creating a variety of ideas that spread from a single piece of cloth. This movie series presents the experimental and fun process of a single piece of cloth being born and becoming clothing, with unique angles and a lighthearted rhythm.

TYPE-A

A single thread becomes cloth, is covered in color, and becomes clothing. The tube knitwear, which symbolizes the start of "A-POC" in 1998, is the first in a series of manufacturing movies that explore all aspects of the process. This is the beginning of a unique video series that concretely and honestly follows the yarn, the machine, and the human hand, all of which are involved in the process.

TYPE-O

Focusing on the steam stretching technique that produces special pleats by applying heat. The unique geometric pattern of the programmed fabric is instantly transformed into a three-dimensional structure of countless peaks and valleys when heat is applied. The secret is the weave ratio of the yarn that shrinks when heated. We took a close-up look at the mysterious and fun changes in the fabric, which were designed based on precise calculations.

TYPE-S

Focusing on the bellows-shaped creases created by utilizing the steam stretch technique. A Jacquard loom with a precise program is used to "weave" a three-dimensional crease and pattern. Needle movements control more than 10,000 warp threads, and the handwork of steam and presses apply heat with subtle adjustments. The process of transforming a single piece of cloth into a three-dimensional garment that is also beautiful for its intended use involves a myriad of technologies and intuition.

TYPE-U

Focusing on a single piece of fabric that features shape memory material. The secret of shape memory is the complex interweaving of polyester yarns on a Jacquard loom. The joy of weaving all the parts into a single piece of cloth, which can then be cut to shape into a jacket, emerges from the honest documentation of the process.

TYPE-P

Focusing on pleats created from prints. A single piece of cloth, which is rubbed with paste and dye without the slightest deviation using a dyeing technique called techinzome (hand printing), is the work of a skilled craftsman. The way the craftsman rhythmically rubs the plate from top to bottom, the colors produced, and the way the fabric expands three-dimensionally when heated by a special glue are all unique.
